Internship - Closing Thoughts

These past three weeks have been some of the most tiring, yet enjoyable weeks of my education. Palomar Hospital and the Clinical Career Extender program has allowed me to really explore the world of healthcare. I got the opportunity to serve many shifts throughout the three weeks and get used to my new department.

How did you make a meaningful contribution to your workplace?

The usual amount of shifts a CCE regularly does is one 4-hour shift a week. During the internship period, I was able to serve two shifts per day, Monday through Friday. 8 hour shifts 5 days at a time was definitely a great way to get used to long work hours. Having served so many shifts, I was able to get much work done. It gave me much more time to interact with the staff nurses and CNAs, as well as the patients. There was no greater feeling than receiving gratitude from the staff and patients for anything I'd do for them, large or small. Even when there wasn't any prominent gratitude, the joy of helping another human being in their vulnerable state was rewarding as it is.

How was your work as an intern meaningful to your education?

Being in a hospital environment has allowed me to learn many different medical terms and vocabulary. I feel like I have absorbed so many of the hospital key words while serving shifts. I learned that the 5 vital signs are Temperature, Blood Pressure, Pulse, Oxygen Saturation, and Respiration. I learned that MRSA stands for Methicilin Resistant Staphyloccocus Aureus, and it's some dangerous stuff. It makes it so easy to communicate with hospital staff when you know what they're talking about.

How was your work significant or meaningful to the world beyond school and your specific internship site?

I think the overall patient experience is useful just about anywhere. It helps one work well with all different kinds of people. When it all comes down to it, human interaction is such a central contribution to society. Being able to communicate well with another person is key to succeeding anywhere.

What qualities or characteristics did you see in the people around you that you want to develop in yourself? Why?

Every single nurse, CNA, doctor, physical therapist, transporter, or anyone involved in patient care that I've ever worked with had one thing in common: they had a passion for people. So many different staff members contribute to the healing process of an individual, and every single one has respect and dedication to human beings. I hope to grow this passion within myself, for it will be one of the main driving forces in my ambitions.

How might internship influence the direction of your life?
I was looking forward to serving so many extra shifts during the internship period, for it would help influence what direction I could take my life. I've always had a childhood love for medicine, and the internship period could either advocate, or discourage me from my dream job. And after 15 total days of work, 8 hours each, except for one 12 hour shift, has helped me decide that yes, the healthcare industry is something I've become even more passionate about. Being able to experience

Internship - New Rotation, New Department

Today is the beginning of the new CCE rotation, where we all move to a new department, and brand new CCEs arrive to their first shift. My first rotation began on March, and ended yesterday on May 31st. I will be leaving Tower 7: Oncology, and moving to Tower 9: Acute Rehabilitation. My previous floor is where most first timer CCEs go, as it was in my case. This morning, I visited my old floor to see my old home, happily greeted by the nurses and CNA's that I worked with for so long; it was a great feeling. I ran into a level II CCE on her first shift. I was delighted that the nurses asked me to "show her the ropes" and get her accustomed to the various routines of the floor. I showed her that each room's whiteboard needed to have the name and extensions of the Nurse, CNA, and Charge Nurse. I showed her where each and everything we'd need for the floor was located. I taught her how to make a bed, how to make rounds, take vitals, etc. etc. It was a very invigorating feeling teaching another so many of the things you learn the hard way. In retrospect, I'd really enjoy trying another rotation on Tower 7, simply for that reason. But then again, I still have yet to give Tower 9 a chance, and I look forward to seeing the different things I'll experience there.

Internship - Week 1 review

Again, I began my internship as a CCE at the hospital before the Junior year Internship period. Although it wasn't my first time serving shifts, I really became involved once Internship began. I was able to serve 5 consecutive 8-hour shifts from Monday to Friday, and even a 12 hour shift for my last time on Tower 7. I feel like I learned so much during this past week, even though I'll be transitioning to a new department today.

My favorite part thus far has been building a very close relationship with the staff that I work with. The nurses began learning my name, which is fairly rare for CCEs. They became very comfortable asking me for help, and we'd always enjoy conversations. The staff not only felt like the employees I help, but colleagues, equals, and ultimately, friends.
The main part of my work that I'd like to improve is my ability to find tasks to complete. There's often times where the floor is not too busy, patients are content, and nurses are doing computer work. I try my best to get anything that can be done, done. I want to be able to always be on task, doing something. Even if it's a trivial job, it's at least getting something done.
Overall, being at the hospital more and more makes me enjoy it further. I really look forward to the remaining Internship period, and I'd love to continue my internship even through college, if possible.

Internship - Day 4 - Interview

As my internship at Palomar Hospital is not under one single mentor, I asked questions to the various nurses and nurses' assistants about their job. It allows many more perspectives to be heard. I didn't want to interrupt the nurses during their extremely busy workflow, so I asked each a quick question in passing.

Why nursing? What got you interested?

"I knew healthcare was what I wanted to do coming into college, so I went ahead with it."
-Joy, RN

"My husband died in room ***, and after being a mother for a while, I decided to be a nurse"
-Barbara, RN

"I was a caretaker for a few years and thought it wasn't enough. So I'm here today, working here for 11 years."
-Louise, CNA

"It's a very enjoyable, yet stressful job. I find it challenging and fun at the same time."
-Sylvia, CNA

What's a typical workday like?

"Although my priority is my patients, I do spend much time logging in notes into the computer regarding each patient's condition. It's important that this information is tracked and accounted for."
-Megan, RN

"Begins and ends with the patients. They are the number one priority here; We're here to make their recovery more comfortable."
-Grace, RN

"There's really no such thing as a "typical" work day, for every single day has something new to teach us. Some days you'll enjoy it, others you wont. It's important not to neglect any one patient or lessen the care you give them based on what kind of day it is."
-JoDeanne, RN

What is the education required of your position?

"An LVN (licensed vocational nurse) generally requires about 2 years of college, and an RN (registered nurse) anywhere from 4-5 years. One can become a CNA (certified nurse's assistant) in under a year."
-Lorna, LVN

Why did you choose to work here at Palomar Hospital?

"I used to work at nursing homes before coming here, and it's an overall much better place to work."
-Linda, RN

"I like the hospital environment much more than, say a doctor's office or clinic."
-Pacita, CNA

What is your favorite thing about working as a nurse (other than general income)?

"Helping patients, or another human being in general, makes it a very rewarding career"
-General response from all nurses.

Internship - Day 1

Today was the very first day of the 11th grade's Internship program. Each students goes to his or her respective place of internship to begin working for the first time. For Jaleh Najmi and I, though, this will be our 3rd month at our internship thus far.

Today was my very first double shift, from 7am to 3pm; each shift is normally 4 hours at a time. Though it began as any other previous shift I've served, it soon became quite an eventful day. The RN's or CNA's have never called upon me to take patients' vitals signs, though I have been trained to do so. Today I was assigned to take vitals for about half the patients on my floor. These vitals include blood pressure, temperature, Oxygen saturation, pulse, and respiration. It was very enjoyable to test several patients for these diagnostics, and it provided me with a sense of fulfillment in what I do.
The main event of the day, though, was in the morning at about 9:30am. As comprehensive and superb as Palomar's health care service is, patients do inevitably pass away. This was the case for one patient that morning, and 3 of us CCE's were privileged to assist the nurse in the body-bagging process. The group composed of the patient's nurse, a CCE level I (college), Jaleh, and myself. It was definitely a fortuitous moment, for it's a job that's not often done.
It's always a great feeling to assist a patient, even in the most minimal ways. There's a hidden type of gratitude that radiates from a thankful patient, who's in a very vulnerable state. I had a patient who required excessive cleaning and frequent bed changes, for his linens were often soiled. Once you clean up a person's bodily excretions, you feel that intangible gratitude; that the patient trusts and likes you.

"What are you excited about learning through this internship experience?"
My future ambition is to someday become a physician, and I tentatively dream to become an anesthesiologist. Though that's very far in the future, I really hope to begin experiencing what the health care industry is like. I'm excited to learn about the different responsibilities each person has in terms of a patient's care. I'm intrigued by the many different people that contribute to any single patient. I'm also ultimately interested in basic knowledge of diseases, illnesses, medications, human anatomy, etc. It would make a great basis for me to learn from.

Internship - Letter of Intent

Hello,

My name is John Torres, and I am a junior at High Tech High North County this school year. As part of my school’s philosophy of acquiring workplace skills in a real-world environment I am required to complete an in-depth internship in a business setting.

I would love to be given the opportunity to contribute my time and energy at the Palomar Pomerado Health clinic hospital. I've always had an interest in the medical field, and I'd find the chance to volunteer as an intern a privilege.

My internship would entail a three week full time immersion at your work site Monday through Friday, beginning Monday, May 24th, and concluding three weeks later on Friday, June 11th.

I have many past experiences working not only as an intern, but as a worker in general. I spent the last two summers as the assistant IT administrator, performing tasks to help the IT admin. I'm able to prioritize my tasks and current assignments, and I go the extra mile to make quality work. I also adapted to having an authority figure to report to.

My ambition is to gain knowledge and experience in the medical field. I hope to learn about the many basic procedures that are performed every day in hospitals. This experience will provide me with prior knowledge when I aspire to study medicine.

If you have any questions or request any further information feel free to contact my internship advisors.

Networking Interview

Tell me a little about yourself

My name is Juan Torres, and I'm a nuclear engineer at the San Onofre power plant.

Tell me about this organization/company

The full name is San Onofre Nuclear Generator Stations, or SONGS, and we provide electricity to millions of homes and buildings in California.

What is the purpose of this organization?

To provide nuclear power, versus the very common gas and oil power.

How did you acquire these skills?

I went to the Mapua Institute of Technology in the Philippines. I feel like this is where i received most of the knowledge I needed to have this job.

What advice do you have for me?

No matter what, be honest. Especially when you're wrong, or screwed up. The best thing to do is admit your mistakes, and learn from them. It's better for yourself, and better for the company.

What questions did I forget to ask? Anything else you'd like to mention?

Don't settle on a career. One could never know what they want to do for the rest of their lives. Think what you love doing, and what you could imagine yourself doing for a long time.

Internship -Life Outside High School Reflections

1. Describe your view of life beyond high school.

There are several different paths I could take after high school. The primary step following high school is definitely college. Without a proper education, I highly doubt I'll be able to find as many opportunities. Any UC (University of California) school would be preferable, though many other colleges would equally suffice.

2. What questions do you have about our world? What do you wonder about? What are you moved to go out and do or learn about on your own time?

I often wonder about the many different functions of the human body. I always question diseases and sicknesses. I wonder the millions of factors that contribute to their spread, and the factors to combat them as well. I also always question human behavior and interaction. I'm intrigued in the way that humans react to certain things, and how certain personalities act differently.

3. In terms of work or a profession, based on my current interests and opportunities, a job in the medical field would be my ambition. Specialty is still debatable, but any type of job in medicine would be preferable.

4. To achieve my current goals, there's definitely a number of steps to take before reaching them. I know that my first prerequisite is education. No doctor can be licensed without proper education. The school itself is an enormous obstacle in itself, as an additional decade in school can be excessive.

5. What qualities or characteristics did you see in the people around you that you want to develop in yourself? Why?

The one quality I'd like to improve in myself would be productivity and initiative. I see so many people with great work ethic, who never seem to exude a stressful attitude. This is one thing I highly seek.

6. How do interpersonal relationships and/or collaboration influence your understanding of life outside of high school?

It's said that with experience comes knowledge. Being able to learn from my experience, and especially mistakes, will allow me to know what to do in many encounters.

Critical Response Essay - "Over"parenting

"The Growing Backlash Against Overparenting"
by Nancy Gibbs
http://www.time.com/time/nation/article/0,8599,1940395,00.html

Parents are the very people that nurture us, care for us, teach us everything we need to know for the life ahead of us. They parent us, though a recent concern has arisen regarding "overparenting". Overparenting refers to parents who are involved in their children's lives at abnormally high levels. These parents are in control of every miniscule detail in their child's every day activity. Also known as "helicopter parenting", these parents hover over their children in hopes that they will become the "perfect" child. Although this way of parenting does have its benefits, all parents should know and follow the advice of D.H. Lawrence: "How to begin to educate a child. First rule: leave him alone. Second rule: leave him alone. Third rule: leave him alone. That is the whole beginning." Helicopter parents take great care when it comes to their children. They're the parents that hire professionals for their child's inability to create masterpieces, make every night a school night, and confiscate pencils for their potential danger. It is this fear that limits a child's experiences; the very thing that shape who they are and who they will become. To deprive children of their imagination does them a great disservice. Children must learn how to fall before they know to pick themselves up.
There should definitely be precautions based on rational safety rules, like seat belts and protective gear. It's the illogical precautions that attract attention. Parents have taken the extreme of photographing their child every morning. In case their child were to go missing, they have a current photo showing what they were wearing that day. It's these very extents that some parents go to for the sake of "protecting" their child, when in retrospect they're merely interfering. Children grow to become very dependent on their parents, lowering their ability to mature and gain independence. It's impractical to attempt to create a perfectly safe world for children. Parents shudder at the thought of allowing children to go to the store alone, while allowing them to ride in a car or taking showers alone have the same potential danger. Parents should trust children at a certain point with their own personal responsibility. A child will never know how to be safe if they're not aware of the dangers.
One of the major downfalls of this way of parenting is the deficit of learning experience. Parents attempt to perfect their child, making every effort to eliminate the mistakes. They completely disregard the fact that mistakes are the most important part of one's life. This is the mindset that motivates foreign language classes before the 5th grade and reduced outdoors time for the sake of longer classes. The effect magnifies when parents find their child "gifted", one of the most inadequate ways to classify a child. The parent of the child with a knack for music decides to find every possible music instructor to train them on their preset career path to stardom. Children lose interest the instant it becomes something they must do, rather than something they want to do.
Is this truly what children need? Parents are definitely to be involved, but is it right to spoon-feed a child, holding their hand through ever experience? It's counterintuitive to believe that the more involved, the better. Parents should initially provide breathing room for their children, and let nature run its course.

The Great Gatsby vs. Death of A Salesman

The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald, and Death of a Salesman, by Arthur Miller share its set of similarities and differences. Both stories detail the slow downfall of the protagonist. Both stories also include the elements of secrecy and hiding things from others. The multiple philanderers between the two stories suffer with distraught after attempting to hide their affairs, creating difficult situations for them. The books are different in that the problems faced by the protagonists are different, but in the end the two become highly unsatisfied with the course of their lives and makes drastic, illogical decisions.
In the Great Gatsby, the opulent Jay Gatsby expresses a deep interest in the married Daisy Buchanan. Gatsby poses his interest to her cousin, Nick Carraway in hopes of getting closer to Daisy. As Gatsby makes progress towards persuading Daisy, they rekindle and old fire of their past relationship. As daisy has an affair with Gatsby, little does she know of her husband, Tom Buchanan, and his affair with Myrtle Wilson. As the unfaithful couple cheats, they become closer and closer to their lovers, and drift farther apart from their own marriage. Tom and Daisy spend less and less time together, in order to have more time with Gatsby or Myrtle. This predictably causes a sense of unrest between the two, as they become more bitter towards each other. As the situation becomes more serious, secrets begin to emerge. Tom discovers his wife's affair with Gatsby, Myrtle's husband, George Wilson discovers his wife is unfaithful. When Tom informs George whom he thought was driving the vehicle that killed Myrtle, George sought revenge. Wilson shot Gatsby, directly before shooting himself. Gatsby's involvement in Daisy directly relates to the chain of events that lead to his death. Had he not been involved with Daisy, they wouldn't have been driving in the car together that night of Myrtle's death.
In Death of a Salesman, Willy Loman is an aged man who no longer makes an adequate living for his family. Committed to the American dream, Willy believes that he will be able to make money due to his selling ability and "contacts". In reality though, no business is willing to offer him a job. Willy Loman gradually loses his mind throughout the story, attempting to kill himself several times, and hallucinating, seeing deceased friends and family in his imagination. Willy has a troubled relationship with his family, especially his sons Biff and Happy, both of which are jobless and unsuccessful. Willy implores the two to seek work and do something with their lives. Willy and Biff's agitated relationship began when Biff discovered his father having an affair. From that point on, there was always a disturbance between the two. Had Willy not been unfaithful, his relationship with his son could have potentially ended up better. This rocky bond between them caused Willy to become depressed and eventually made him lose his ability to work. Willy ultimately killed himself due to the fact that his uneasy relationships with friends, family, and business partners drove him insane and suicidal.
The main difference in the two stories is the contrast in class between the two protagonists. Gatsby, being a wealthy, lavish man living a luxurious life, versus Willy Loman's struggle to put food on the table. The two men also desire different things, where Gatsby seeks the woman of his dreams, whereas Willy looks for wealth and business. The fact that they both desire something so deeply, that it indirectly, killed them both, teaches a very important lesson. Regardless of social class, wealth, or status, one always has the potential to have a great downfall.
The two stories, The Great Gatsby and Death of a Salesman both teach critically important lessons. Although the scope of the story is slightly different, they have their similarities somewhere along the story line. Even with the major differences of character and situation, they both converge to teach an even better (aforementioned) lesson. It's vital that one realizes the causes and effects in this series of events that eventually caused a tragic death for both protagonists.

Proyecto de Español - La Leyndas

En la clase de Español, estudiamos sobre a la leyenda. Investigamos nuestro la leyendas. Antes de la investigación, entrevistamos personas hable hispaña, sobre la leyendas.

The Virgin Mary is a very prolific being among the church. Those with Christian faith have believed to see the Virgin Mary, mother of Jesus in various locations in many different objects. When one claims to have seen the very Virgin Mary imprinted in certain structures, even at the most vague of levels, others agree and "see" Mary. These sightings are known as Marian apparitions.
One of the most famous Marian apparitions was by Juan Diego of Mexico. According to legend, Juan lived in Mexico in the 16th century. A devout Christian man, he went to mass every weekend. Once when on his way to church, Juan heard birds singing on a hill, and someone saying his name. Curiously, he continued toward the hill to find the source of the sound. When he reached the end of the hill, he saw what he interpreted as the Virgin Mary. She requested that he have the local Bishop construct a church on the site. The Bishop skeptic, he demanded proof of this sighting. Returning to the hill, Juan requested a sign from the Virgin Mary. She arranged a set of out of bloom flowers on his cloak. When Juan returned to the Bishop, he presented not only the flowers, but his cloak with an imprinted image of Mary on it. It is situations like this when people become insane with excitement. They see the mother of their savior in the mortal world.
Some have had Marian Apparitions in the most outlandish locations; a certain pattern burnt onto their toast, washing a car leaving an intricate soap residue, etc. Many might go as far as to consider themselves as chosen ones, for example.
Is the Virgin Mary really making herself known to the world, are are people just overdramatic?

Math III - Marble Shooter Project

The first step we took in the Marble Shooter project was to learn the various equations required for this project. These variables include the ∆y, or the height at which the marble reached, ∆x, which is the distance the marble traveled horizontally, the ∆t, which is the amount of time the marble was airborne, and the Vi, the initial velocity at which the marble was launched. The equations that these values are used are as shown:

    Horizontal Vertical
    a= 0 m/s2
    Vxi = Vicosø
    ∆x =
    ∆t =
    a = -9.81 m/s2
    Vyi = Visinø
    ∆y =
    ∆t =
    Vxf = Vxi
    ∆x = Vxi∆t
    Vyf = Vyi + a∆t
    ∆y = Vyi∆t + 1/2a(∆t)

In some way, one of these values were measured. Using the given equations, we were able to find the unknown values based on the values we do know.

    The Build
The intention of learning all these various Math equations was to create a projectile (marble) launcher. We were to create a device that would launch a marble in the air, capable of launching at 3 different velocities at 10 different degrees.
This was the end result of my team, consisting of Nathaniel LeGare, Noam Zekzer, and myself.

To test our product, we were to launch a marble with our device at different degrees and velocities. We recorded the distance that the marble traveled horizontally (∆x) and the approximate amount of air-time the marble had (∆t). We launched the marble, adjusted angles, and set a stop watch to start and stop at the time of launch, and time of landing.

The following shows how the horizontal distance relates to the angle of launch

The following graph shows how the Vertical PEAK relates to the angle of launch.
